POSITION: FAMILY LAW LEGAL ASSISTANT or PARALEGAL

FUNCTION: To be an integral team member and support for lawyers working in the area of family law and civil litigation.
Interacting and building relationships with clients including intake, rapport building, general communication and billing
Connecting clients with various non-legal community resources and services to help them with their real lives and underlying issues
Building relations and corresponding with justice system stakeholders including law firms, court registries, government departments, police agencies and more
Integrating with and supporting lawyers as part of a litigation team including providing suggestions to improve practice management and the firm itself
Drafting pleadings and affidavits to give voice to our clients in the most compelling manner possible
Being a team player by offering support for reception coverage, office and court filings, mails outs, bank runs, system creation and whatever else is needed
Managing lawyer schedules and correspondence so they can meet clients, prepare files, advocate in court but also have room to breathe and recharge
Do legal research as part of a team to find that magic bullet that changes a case
Minimum typing speed of 55 wpm
Intermediate skill in MS Word
Experience with CLIO or other legal software
Completion of a Legal Assistant or Paralegal Program
An equivalent combination of education and experience shall be considered
Some experience and knowledge of family law
Other conversational or fluent language skills
Knowledge of secretarial and administrative procedures
Knowledge of record-keeping filing systems; ability to set-up and maintain filing systems
Ability to communicate effectively with a wide variety of clients and professionals
Ability to identify, analyze and solve problems
Ability to draft routine and complex business correspondence
Ability to organize workload, identify urgent items and set priorities
Ability to be discreet and manage confidential information
Ability to work with a high level of accuracy and efficiency
Ability to assign and direct work to casual help
Ability to work independently, take initiative and function effectively as part of a team
Must have excellent communication, interpersonal skills and a good sense of humour
Must be detail-oriented.
Must have excellent organizational skills
Must have sound knowledge of MS Windows environment and internet research tools
SALARY: Depends on experience (DOE), includes generous benefits package
